I have a friend who closes her e-mails to absolutely everyone with this Bible verse: “Do not anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6).
Reading that always comforts me. I know I can transfer the weight of the world from my shoulders to God’s. That’s what I’m doing today on this National Day of Prayer.
This day was designated by the United States Congress as a time when people are asked to come together and pray, especially for their country. It was created as a floating holiday in 1952 and later fixed on the first Thursday in May.
Every time this day rolls around, the song Christian singer Michael Card wrote and sang for 1993’s National Day of Prayer pops into my mind. Titled, “Heal Our Land,” it’s right from 2 Chronicles 7:14. It is beautiful and meaningful and if possible, please check it out on youtube.
I’d like to share the words with you which are a prayer we can offer not only today, but every day. After all, no matter where we turn we see that our land and its people need healing – from floods and tornadoes to attempted car bombings, from sickness and disease to loneliness, from voids left by someone we love dying, from little hearts broken because someone at school is mean to them. God hears and understands it all and he can heal it.
There are so many things to pray for we should be like Martin Luther who once said: “I have so much to do today, I think I’ll spend the first three hours in prayer.”
I cannot read the words of Michael Card’s song without its melody playing in my head.
Forgive, Oh Lord, and heal our land, and give us eyes to seek your face and hearts to understand, that you alone make all things new. And the blessings of the land we love are really gifts from you.
Unite our hearts, in one accord, and make us hungry for your peace, and burdened for the poor; and grant us hope, that we might see, the future of the land we love, our life, our liberty.
If my people will humble pray, and seek my face and turn away from all their wicked ways, then I will hear them, and move my hand; and freely then will I forgive, and I will heal their land.
Thank you, Michael, for a song that prays it all.
